There Will Be Blood

SPOILER WARNING
There Will Be Blood, is a 2007 film directed, written, and produced by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film is inspired by Upton Sinclair's novel Oil! (1927), and tells the story of Daniel Plainview's quest for power in Southern California's oil boom of the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano.
Plot summary:In the 1890s, Daniel Plainview, a struggling silver miner, finds his true wealth in petroleum extraction while taking the orphaned child, H.W., as his own for a valuable family man image. In 1911, Plainview gets a tip on a valuable supply on the struggling Sunday family ranch in the impoverished Little Boston, California. In his quest to acquire the property, Plainview meets the sanctimonious Eli Sunday, the young reverend of the local church with his own ambitions for his diocese and the profit from the oil. (IMDB.com)
There Will Be Blood is basically about the rise and fall of Daniel Plainview( Daniel Day-Lewis).A strugging miner becomes a wealthy entrepreneur, but gradually loses himself, loses his sanity,he begins to slowly alienate himself from everyone in his life. Before reaching this stage, he uses all the means that he can use in order to acquire the land and to profit from oil.To do so,he manipulates and deceives the locals, presenting himself as a family man and later as repentant sinner. His relationship with the young reverend of the "Church of the third Apocalypse" is an important part of the plot.It is another game of manipulation, which reaches the edge and eventually leads to a tragic outcome.
The movie presents the development of the U.S society and economy during the late 1890s and the first decades of the 20th century. The local society Little Boston, California is presented in its various aspects.Apart from the locals, their beliefs and their way of living,we see an ongoing struggle for the exploitation of oil.The movie leads to the 1929 stock market crash. In these circumstances we see the quest of Daniel Plainview.A complex personality,a man that achieved his goals, but gradually lost his sanity, his sense of reason. He also faced a family tragedy, with the loss of hearing of his son.The relationship with him had an unpleasant conclusion, which was the outcome of the slowly mounting malevolent madness.Despite his wealth,Daniel Plainview is lost in his own ambition.
The perfomance of Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the strong points of the movie. His portrayal of the ruthless entrepreneur is exceptional and he is deservedly nominated for an Academy Award. There is so much depth and expressiveness in his perfomance.
Although the movie progresses slowly,it has astonishing cinematography, very good music (composed by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood) and direction.Paul Thomas Anderson proves his consistency and his skills as a director, after Boogie Nights,Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love.
There Will Be Blood is a journey to a man's soul,a soul that's eventually lost.
"I see the worst in people"

The movie is nominated in 8 categories in today's 80th Academy Award ceremony

Sicko

Sicko is another controversial Micheal Moore documentary, which investigates the American health care system, focusing on its for-profit health insurance and pharmaceutical industry. The film compares the non-universal and for-profit U.S. system with the universal and non-profit systems of Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Cuba.It was released in June 2007 (U.S).
Sicko uncovers some shocking facts and incindents concerning the American health care system. For example,we see an almost 80 year old man,who still works in order to get his medication. We also see the role of lobbies and mainly the role and the practices of health insurance companies.U.S does not have a universal health care system,a system which some defend, arguing that the application of such a system would be "one step before socialism".Senator Hilary Clinton, was involved, when Bill Clinton was president,in an effort to introduce a universal health care system, but with the fierce opposition this plan was scrapped. It is revealed that Ms.Clinton is the Senate's second-highest recipient of health care industry campaign donations. Now during the campaign for the presidential nomination,Hilary Clinton says that she's for a universal health care system.Barack Obama says that health care should be mandatory only for children.
During the movie there is also a retrospection to the origins of the current U.S health care system (among other references, the reference to the Health Maintance Organization Act of 1973).As i mentioned before, the non-universal and for-profit U.S. system is compared with the universal and non-profit systems of Canada, the United Kingdom , France and Cuba.
However, there are simplifications, generalisations and a sense of populism.Furthermore,i think that the whole incident with the 9/11 rescuers was unfortunate.Anyway,Sicko is a documentary that reveals one of the reasons for which U.S.A could be regarded as "a giant with glass legs".

Knight Rider (2008 pilot)

Last summer i saw Knight Rider 2000 (tv movie released in 1991) and i also may have seen few minutes of some episodes a long time ago. So,my knowledge about the original Knight Rider is not accurate.
Knight Rider is a television movie that serves as a backdoor pilot for a potential new Knight Rider series. There are references to the original series, but there also changes to some plot elements. This film completely ignores the alternate future and plot changes from the Knight Rider 2000 film.David Hasselhoff briefly appears towards the end.Although it certainly had flaws, this tv movie/pilot was entertaining and i am looking forward to how it'll develop into a series.
The movie averaged a viewership of 12.8 million viewers.
Note :nice car! (i am referring to the Ford Mustang GT500KR a.k.a KITT).

Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 2007 black comedy/horror film/musical film, a film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's musical of the same name. The film stars Johnny Depp in the title role, in his sixth collaboration with director Tim Burton. Helena Bonham Carter also stars as Mrs. Lovett.
To be honest,I am not a fan of musicals( the last i saw was Phantom of the Opera in early 2005) and for that reason i was reluctant to watch Sweeney Todd.It took me some minutes to get accustomed to the musical aspect of the movie.
The Broadway musical seems like the perfect material for Tim Burton to work on.Common elements of Burton’s filmography are present in Sweeney Todd. His version is not an ordinary musical (others argue that Sweeney Todd is not a musical but a gothic opera). While the original musical serves as the basis of the film adaptation,it has evolved in a dark, cruel, complex, cynical, impressive but deeply sentimental and humaine movie. When I say that the movie is complex,i don’t mean that it is difficult for the audience to follow what’s going on,but i mean that there’s so much meaning in the movie.Johny Depp delivers an excellent performance, with some very powerfull, expressive moments .His vocal skills are also surpisingly good.
A lot could be said about the (very good)music of the movie, the atmosphere, the visual quality, the performances, the meaning of the movie. The fact is that despite some (minor) flaws,Sweeney Todd is very good movie, with a final shot that words can’t describe .Words are meaningless. It is such a poetic image.

Note:You’ll appreciate the music of the movie even more if ,after watching the movie, you listen to the soundtrack.Since I watched the movie,I listen to it often. It would be better if you find the Deluxe Complete Edition, because that is the complete, best version(The Highlights version features fewer tracks and some tracks are longer in the Deluxe version).

Michael Caine:”I became an actor in order to have beautiful girls”

With the opportunity of the second adaptation of Sleuth, the great actor talks about his role, his relationship with Jude Law and about the beginning of his career.

-I wonder,Sir Caine,how it is to adapt a play to the cinema;

Logical question, which many people do it.It is difficult but when you accomplish that you see that you have all the good elements of the play in a movie. You should pay a lot of attention to succeed in having the pros of the play. And Sleuth does that.In other words it is a play with quick movement, power and soul of a movie. The play does not have by itself the movement that a movie can have.At first,it crossed my mind,I must confess, that Harold wasn’t ok (laughs).

-What made you decide to do the remake;

I disagree with the term remake.I don’t think that the movie is a remake.I would not do a remake of a movie in which Joseph L. Mankiewicz had done a great job.I think that what we did is a movie in an evolved screenplay by Harold Pinter, who never saw neither the previous movie nor the play. The movie is based in a play by Anthony Schaffer, which was made into a movie in 1970,directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and in which i had the luck to be a protagonist.I know Pinter for 50 years, when we were both actors and I appraise him.His name at the time was David Barron. He decided later to write plays with his real name. His first play was called “the room”.When Jude brought me the text,i decided to do it without reading it,because I trusted Pinter.I read later the screenplay and I loved it.So,i am here now.

-What differences you see between the two movies?

Firstly, all these that have to do with technology.Cellphones, computers…We didn’t have them in 1972.However,it is not only them.Filming for the first movie took 16 weeks. This time only 4.Furthermore,this movie is one hour shorter than the other.I have not seen the other movie for 30 years and I have forgotten some things.Pinter,as I said before, never saw it and that is the whole point.

-You believe that actors become more comfortable with experience?

Of course. After all,it is logical.I do a movie today, having played in another 85.I am more sure.

-Judi Dench has said that in time she became less and less sure…

Really;I think that you become more comfortable, not completely comfortable. You’ll never say I’m perfect in something. You’ll always have a stress,a nervousness, like doing it for the first time.If you don’t have there’s probably a problem.I watch sometimes these talent shows where many participants state “I am the best”,”I am the new Whitney Houston”.I am surprised, because they sing without soul, without nerve and of course they are useless. To return to the movie,I think that me and Jude are comfortable as much as we can, because none of us has not done rehearsals for a movie for three weeks. On the other hand,we knew exactly what to do.I work with an actor who is as good as i am-he is also a producer-and of course with a very good director(Kenneth Branagh),who knows what he’s doing.

-Which are your similarities with Jude Law,as men and as actors?

There is no similarity. His approach is totally different. He is darker. After all we don’t have the same background.I come from a working class with different experiences.

Jude’s parents were teachers.I come from a tough environment.I am a big fan of him

from”Mr.Ripley”.I watch English actors and I think he is very good..We’re friends too.

We have both done theatre,we have the experience of the stage actor.Theater educates,no matter how we do it.

-You’re also friends. What do you like doing together?

We love food and we go out frequently at night to eat.We talk,we make fun,we comment on various things. However, basically,we have nothing in common.

I live in the coutryside, away from the lights of publicity, and with other habits.

I am also a hundred years older(laughs). However,we enjoy a lot the company of each other.

-Many of your colleagues have said that they became actors to have women…Do you agree?

Absolutely. That is exactly why I became an actor.I began when I was 14.I entered an amateur theatre school, because all the beautiful girls were there.I was in the basketball team and I remember, when I returned from the field,I was passing outside the door of that school and I saw that all the beautiful girls were in there. And i ask myself:”What the hell I was doing in the field playing basketball;”A lady saw me and opened the door. She says to me:”Come, because we don’t have much men”.You know,at that time a lot of men did not participate in these in order not to be characterized..you can imagine.I got in and I never regretted it.

-Closing the interview,I would like to ask you how is it,the erotic atmosphere between two men..

Threatening. That is why i also wear glasses.I have very strange eyes(laughs). In school they called them “snake eyes”.

The soundtrack of love-From the first thrill till the last blow

Love and music are two notions that are closely connected. The various folds of love have,of course, have their musical expression. This is a selective classification of the moods of love through songs of international repertoire that characterise them.We always begin from the hopeful start:
-The mood of the erotic "siege":Ronnettes-Be my baby (So won't you, please [backing vocals:BE MY BE MY] be my little baby/Say you'll be my darlin'/be my baby now).http://youtube.com/watch?v=8-0upHlWfQ4
-The mood "Drunk by the nectar of the first thrill":Barry White-You're my First,my Last, you're my Everything (We got it together, didn't we?/Nobody but you and me/We got it together,baby/My first,my last,my everything//And the answer to all my dreams/You're my sun,my moon,my guiding star/My kind of wonderful, that's what you are).http://youtube.com/watch?v=4nPAyZG05bU
-The purely sexual mood:Marvin Gaye-Let's get it on.http://youtube.com/watch?v=U8B2KF7_7OU
-The dependent mood:Bon Jovi-Bad medicine ( Your love is like bad medicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Shake it up, just like bad madicine
There ain't no doctor that can
Cure my disease ).http://youtube.com/watch?v=WWA28E0r_1c&feature=related
-The depression mood:Bruce Springsteen-The River (Now all them things that seemed so important/
Well mister they vanished right into the air/
Now I just act like I don't remember/
Mary acts like she don't care)http://youtube.com/watch?v=_q3LvjD-eZ8.Stong also in this category is "Love will Tear us apart" by Joy Division http://youtube.com/watch?v=K0dfd_L4tDk
-The mood of non acceptance of accomplished events (a.k.a the mood of the stalker):Police-Every breath you take.http://youtube.com/watch?v=jXq3hO82cTY
-The mood "I broke up,i feel pain,i can't stand living no more":Bonnie Tyler-Total Eclipse of the Heart (Once upon a time I was falling in love but now I'm only falling apart...There's nothing i can do/
A total eclipse of the heart).http://youtube.com/watch?v=55nTwg5NIPM
-The misanthropic mood:Alice Cooper -Poison(http://youtube.com/watch?v=-1c14Z0YUTU),Bob Dylan-Don't think twice(http://youtube.com/watch?v=GtkVGClqrT4),Buzzcocks-Ever Fallen in Love with Someone(http://youtube.com/watch?v=jRE79bxfMtY),Burt Bacarach-I'll Never Fall in Love Again(http://youtube.com/watch?v=oWikDJhtgEY) :What do you get when you fall in love?
You get enough tears to fill an ocean
That's what you get for your devotion
I'll never fall in love again.

Sleuth Review

"A millionaire detective novelist matches wits with the unemployed actor who ran off with his wife in a deadly serious, seriously twisted game with dangerous consequences."

According to most accounts, this is a remake of the 1972 film, but Pinter's screenplay offers "a fresh take" on Shaffer's play and "a very different form" from the original film. In his review of the film's debut at the 2007 Venice Film Festival, Morris observes: "The reworking of the play is not just an adept transformation of theater to film ... but also casts a revealing light on social history, reflecting the enormous changes in English society, language and morals in the nearly 40 years since the play first appeared on the London stage."

Caine played the role of Milo Tindle in the original film. In the 2007 film, Caine performs the role of Andrew Wyke, originated by Laurence Olivier, and Law performs Caine's original role of Milo Tindle. This is the second film in which Law performs a role originated by Caine (The first was the title role in Alfie).

Pinter, the actors, and the director say this version of Sleuth is not strictly a "remake." Law has called it "a completely reinvented Sleuth" ... It didn't feel like a remake. I always loved the idea at its heart of two men battling it out for a woman you never meet....'"Law further felt that, "I was creating a character [Milo Tindle], I wasn't recreating one.'" Caine said, "I never felt that I had gone back to Sleuth", and called the Pinter script "an entirely different thing. There isn't a single line in it that was in the other one, and Pinter had never seen the [1972] movie. Jude [Law] gave him the stage play and said, 'Write a screenplay for me' ... It was a completely different experience'". In a television interview conducted on RAI TV during the Venice International Film Festival, Caine states: "If the script hadn't been by Harold Pinter, I wouldn't have done the movie".

Pinter said, "'It's a totally new take. ... I had not either seen or read the play, and I hadn't seen the film adapted from the play either, so I knew nothing about it. So I simply read the play and I think it's totally transformed. I've kept one or two plot things because you have to but apart from that, I think I've made it my own'" (wikipedia.org)
Sleuth is a mind game,a quite elaborate one.It is one of these movies that you either like their concept from the start or you don't.One of the points of criticism has to do with the scenery and the direction of the movie. Many critics find the movie too dark or claustrophobic. In my opinion the scenery is not by any means a drawback,it is actually a positive element. It helps in the creation of the suggestive, dark atmosphere of the movie which reflects the content of the plot, the emotions of the main characters. The minimalist nature of the domicile is theatening and so the characters are ,a threat to each other.
As i said before ,Sleuth is an elaborate mind game. The elaborate nature of the plot, while at first it seems simple, leads sometimes the audience to be fooled or to be confused. One very strong aspect of the movie are the dialogues. The script of Nobel prize winner Harold Pinter is full of smart,straight-forward,even cynical lines."Caine and Law are in fine form bantering cleverly in this entertaining cat-and-mouse game, thanks to the inspired dialogue of Harold Pinter. They parry, using witticisms instead of swords." says Claudia Puig in her review.
The dialogues aid the verbal battle between Wyke and Tiddle, which is the main focus of the movie.Jude Law and Micheal Caine engage in a ruthless battle, from which only one will survive. While Jude Law's perfomance is adequate, the perfomance of Micheal Caine stands out.
His portrayal of Andrew Wyke as a smart, deceiving, cynical detective novelist is brilliant.
The music aids to the suggestive nature of the atmosphere. The movie "slows" down towards the end but comes to a fitting conclusion."Goodbye darling."
Sleuth is a mind game in which either you participate (along with the characters) or you don't.As far as i am concerned,i participated and i enjoyed it.

Feast of Love Review

Feast of Love is a 2007 film by Robert Benton, starring Morgan Freeman, Fred Ward and several other actors. The cast-ensemble drama, based on the novel of the same name by Charles Baxter, was first released on September 28, 2007 in USA and 2008 in worldwide cinema.
A meditation on love and its various incarnations, set within a community of friends in Portland, Oregon. It is described as an exploration of the magical, mysterious and sometimes painful incarnations of love. (wikipedia.org)
Feast of Love is a bittersweet movie. It is indeed an exploration of the magical, mysterious and sometimes painful incarnations of love.In the movie there is an interesting reflection on love, loneliness and on other subjects. The movie is bittersweet, because the life, the development of the life of the characters is bittersweet."And so we begin again" Harry Stevenson (Morgan Freeman) says in the end of the movie. It is the circle of life.Joy and sorrow, sorrow and joy. That is life and that is love.It has its moments of happinness, but it also has its sad ones.Sometimes it is rewarding, others it is painful. It has a happy or a sad, sometimes tragic ending. It has its challenges but in these moments it appears how strong the love is.
The perfomances are adequate (from which the perfomances of Morgan Freeman and Alexa Davalos stand out). There are nice lines, nice scenes but there are also cliches.I have not read the book,on which the movie is based ,so i can't comment on the differences, etc. To sum up,Feast of Love is a decent movie that is well worth watching.
